Thinking Luther. The Reformation in the Works of Jena Scholars
The Jena University has been for a long time considered as the stronghold of true Lutheranism and as a place of the reception of Luther and the Reformation. From the 16th century until today Jena theologians and representatives of the church and of other academic disciplines continually reflected on the legacy of the Reformation in view of Protestant religion and the academic scholarly culture, shaping therewith German theological and intellectual history. The present volume explores little-known ceremonial sermons and the public impact of the Reformation anniversaries on church, art, culture, and society. Furthermore, it analyzes the impact of Jena scholars on theology and historiography in the 20th century. All contributions derive from lectures that were held in the framework of the lectures series of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena in the summer semester 2017.
