These proceedings contain current research from industry, academiaand government organizations, working on opaque and transparentceramic armor. Papers on novel materials concepts for both vehicleand body armors are included, as well as papers that explore therelationship between computational modeling and propertytesting.
These papers were presented at the Proceedings of the 30thInternational Conference on Advanced Ceramics and Composites,January 22-27, 2006, Cocoa Beach, Florida. Organized and sponsoredby The American Ceramic Society and The American Ceramic Society'sEngineering Ceramics Division in conjunction with the Nuclear andEnvironmental Technology Division.

Author Index.

Andrew A. Wereszczak received his Ph.D. in Materials Science& Engineering from the University of Delaware in 1992, andwhile his research is varied, the study and interpretation of therelationship between mechanical properties and microstructure (ofmonolithic ceramics, structural materials, and electronicmaterials) are common denominators. Micromechanicalcharacterization of structural and armor ceramics usinginstrumented static and dynamic indentation (e.g., Hertzian) withacoustic emission analysis, and adapting those measuredperformances and damage mechanism analyses to strength, rollingcontact fatigue, wear, machining, and ballistic performances is aprimary objective.
Additionally, ceramic strength and fatigue testing, ceramicfractographical and flaw population analyses, Weibull analysisstrength-size-scaling, and probabilistic life prediction and designof structural ceramic components constitutive another primaryresearch objective. In support of all these efforts, bothconventional and microstructural-level finite element stressanalyses and microstructure characterization are performed. He isthe author or co-author of over 100 technical publications and hasgiven over 80 presentations, and is the co-developer ofµ-FEA software.
Edgar Lara-Curzio is a Distinguished Research StaffMember and the leader of the Mechanical Properties and MechanicsGroup at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Since 1999 he hasbeen serving as leader of the Mechanical Characterization andAnalysis User Center in ORNL's High Temperature MaterialsLaboratory. Lara-Curzio received a B.Sc. degree inEngineering Physics from the Metropolitan University in Mexico Cityin 1986 and a Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from RensselaerPolytechnic Institute, Troy NY, in 1992.
His research work has been focused on studying the mechanicalbehavior, durability and reliability of structural and functionalmaterials, on understanding the relationships among theirprocessing, microstructure and properties, studying the effect ofservice environment on their properties and on developing models todescribe their behavior and to predict their service life.
Dr. Lara-Curzio has co-edited 6 books and has authored 4 bookchapters and more than 140 publications in refereed journals andconference proceedings.
