The transition from a monarchy to a republic in Austria 1918/19 was relatively peaceful, yet provoked long-lasting conflict lines which marked the whole First Republic. Therefore, history writers understood the “Austrian Revolution” (Otto Bauer) mostly as a governmental change of paradigm. The contributions in this issue enhance the established views with a new perspective. They explore the question how people experienced and interpreted the events aside the political elites. How did people, who were not active in parties or political organisations before, attempt to influence the events – and what were the underlying motives? Was the transformation simply an urban phenomenon and how was the situation perceived outside the capital Vienna?
