Tracing Marley's life and work from Jamaica to the worldstage, Toynbee suggests that we need to understand Marley first andforemost as a 'social author'. Trained in theco-operative yet also highly competitive musical laboratory ofdowntown Kingston, Marley went on to translate reggae into asuccessful international style. His crowning achievement was to mixpostcolonial anger and hope with Jamaican textures and beats toproduce the first world music.
However the period since his death has been marked by brutal andintensifying inequality in the capitalist world system. There is anurgent need, then, to reconsider the nature of his legacy. Toynbeedoes this in the concluding chapters, weighing Marley'simpact as advocate of human emancipation against hismarginalisation as a 'Natural Mystic' and pretext fordisengagement from radical politics.
