South Korea is a highly industrialised country which is not as well known as its East Asian neighbours, China and Japan. Yet it has one of the most high tech literate populations in the world, and some of the largest global companies, whose products are used around the world daily, such as Samsung Galaxy smart phones and large screen LCD televisions. This book charts the growth in innovation, investment and the development of intellectual property rights in modern day South Korea, exploring how far South Korea’s industrial success can be attributed to these factors. It examines how the climate which encouraged investment and innovation was developed through the chaebol conglomerates, explores how the regulation of intellectual property rights has been aligned to international standards and the effects of this, and discusses the continuing impact on South Korea’s economy and businesses of North Korea’s repressive regime. The book concludes by assessing the future prospects for innovation, investment and intellectual property rights, and for economic success, in South Korea.
