The fundamental question regarding the transition between the seemingly contradictory quantum and classical description of nature has intrigued physicists since the discovery of quantum mechanics.
Further insight on preparing non-classical states in macroscopic systems is expected from creating hybrid quantum systems of entirely different partners.
This thesis details the realization of such a hybrid quantum system consisting of a Bose-Einstein condensate and a cryogenically pre-cooled membrane oscillator. The latter is enclosed by a Fabry-Pérot cavity, representing a membrane-in-the-middle system. A light field mediates the mutual coupling between both systems over a macroscopic distance.
