This book offers a comparative and transnational analytical framework to provide a comprehensive overview of formal and informal markets, place, and the urban. It examines how markets are situated within social, cultural and media discourses, and within material and symbolic urban economies. It adopts four key narratives – redevelopment and relocation; privatization of public space; urban renewal; and resilience and sustainability – to explore the shared and individual attributes of markets and place in diverse, international, urban contexts. With case studies in Sydney, Beijing, Rio de Janeiro, London, Antwerp, and San Francisco, the experience of the market and the city is explored through an interdisciplinary and multimodal perspective of visual culture, spatial practice and sensory experience.
