[Name and Memory: Anthropological and Theological Perspectives on Personality and Death]
Starting with a funeral service for so-called 'angel babies' (Sternenkinder) this study uses Helmuth Plessner’s anthropological concept as the interpretative category for a relational concept of personality. This perspective is supplemented by the intellectual concepts of Hartmut Rosa and Thomas Fuchs who both elevate human corporeality to a central interpretative phenomenon of being a person and dealing with the human world. From a theological perspective, coming to terms with the phenomenon of death is examined based on the approaches of Paul Tillich, Eberhardt Jüngel, Wolfhart Pannenberg, and Gerhard Ebeling. Following a close reading of the respective concepts it emerges in discussion with the hermeneutical concepts of Hans Blumenberg and Vladimir Jankélévitch that metaphorical language represents an essential factor in dealing with the problem of death. This perspective is broadened by a reflection anchored in ritual theory.
