This volume is a collection of papers from a conference held in Mainz in November 2022. Its objective is to examine the various dimensions of Byzantium's presence at early modern courts. Consequently, the scope of the publication extends to the treatment of Byzantine artefacts, the reception of Byzantium in the context of power and extant knowledge of Byzantium within the courtly milieu. The papers aim to explore the competition for Byzantine heritage and assess the extent to which it was revived and utilised.
Der vorliegende Band ist ein Kompendium der Beiträge einer Konferenz, die im November 2022 in Mainz stattfand. Sein Ziel ist es, die verschiedenen Dimensionen der Präsenz von Byzanz an frühneuzeitlichen Höfen zu untersuchen. Folglich erstreckt sich der Umfang der Publikation auf den Umgang mit byzantinischen Artefakten, die Rezeption von Byzanz im Kontext der Macht und das vorhandene Wissen über Byzanz innerhalb des höfischen Milieus. Die Beiträge zielen darauf ab, den Wettbewerb um das byzantinische Erbe zu erforschen und zu bewerten, inwieweit es wiederbelebt und genutzt wurde.
