[Where Am I When I’m in Front of the Screen? Liturgical-Aesthetic Investigations]
Great is the yearning of the churches and their administrations for the sometimes enormous publicity generated by the new, “social” media. Under the conditions of a pandemic that restricts public life to an extraordinary degree, the importance of this heavily image-based public sphere has grown even more. Artists and scholars of various orientations have long explored the possibilities and limits of media design and existence. Yet the churches’ concrete theory and practice in this field appears surprisingly unaffected.
The book by Dietrich Sagert, who has already made his mark with many helpful publications, presents investigations that arose by observing practical experience during the pandemic year. They may be read as impulses to elude, liturgically and aesthetically, the self-reference evoked by media – what one could call selfiness.
