Environmental and Low-Temperature Geochemistry presentsconceptual and quantitative principles of geochemistry in order tofoster understanding of natural processes at and near theearth's surface, as well as anthropogenic impacts on the natural environment. It provides the reader with theessentials of concentration, speciation and reactivity of elementsin soils, waters, sediments and air, drawing attention to boththermodynamic and kinetic controls. Specific featuresinclude:
* An introductory chapter that reviews basic chemicalprinciples applied to environmental and low-temperaturegeochemistry
* Explanation and analysis of the importance of minerals inthe environment
* Principles of aqueous geochemistry
* Organic compounds in the environment
* The role of microbes in processes such asbiomineralization, elemental speciation and reduction-oxidationreactions
* Thorough coverage of the fundamentals of importantgeochemical cycles (C, N, P, S)
* Atmospheric chemistry
* Soil geochemistry
* The roles of stable isotopes in environmentalanalysis
* Radioactive and radiogenic isotopes as environmentaltracers and environmental contaminants
* Principles and examples of instrumental analysis inenvironmental geochemistry
The text concludes with a case study of surface water andgroundwater contamination that includes interactions and reactionsof naturally-derived inorganic substances and introduced organiccompounds (fuels and solvents), and illustrates theimportance of interdisciplinary analysis in environmentalgeochemistry.
Readership: Advanced undergraduate and graduate studentsstudying environmental/low T geochemistry as part of an earthscience, environmental science or related program.

Weitere Infos & Material

Peter Crowley Ryan is Professor of Geology andEnvironmental Studies at Middlebury College where he teachescourses in environmental geochemistry, hydrology, sedimentarygeology and interdisciplinary environmental science. Hereceived a Ph.D. in geology at Dartmouth College, an M.S. ingeology from the University of Montana and a B.A. in earth sciencesfrom Dartmouth College. He has served as Director of the Program inEnvironmental Studies and as Chair of the Department of Geology atMiddlebury College. His research interests fall into two mainareas: (1) understanding the geological and mineralogical controlson trace element speciation, particularly the occurrence andmobility of arsenic and uranium in bedrock aquifers; and (2) thetemporal evolution of marine terrace soils in the tropics, withemphasis on mechanisms and rates of mineralogical reactions,nutrient cycling and application of soil geochemical analysis tocorrelation and geological interpretation.
