Describes the general principles and current research into ModelPredictive Control (MPC); the most up-to-date control methodfor power converters and drives
The book starts with an introduction to the subject before thefirst chapter on classical control methods for power converters anddrives. This covers classical converter control methods andclassical electrical drives control methods. The next chapter onModel predictive control first looks at predictive control methodsfor power converters and drives and presents the basic principlesof MPC. It then looks at MPC for power electronics and drives. Thethird chapter is on predictive control applied to power converters. It discusses: control of a three-phase inverter; control of aneutral point clamped inverter; control of an active front endrectifier, and; control of a matrix converter. In the middle of thebook there is Chapter four - Predictive control applied to motordrives. This section analyses predictive torque control ofindustrial machines and predictive control of permanent magnetsynchronous motors. Design and implementation issues of modelpredictive control is the subject of the final chapter. Thefollowing topics are described in detail: cost function selection;weighting factors design; delay compensation; effect of modelerrors, and prediction of future references. While there arehundreds of books teaching control of electrical energy using pulsewidth modulation, this will be the very first book published inthis new topic.
* Unique in presenting a completely new theoretic solution tocontrol electric power in a simple way
* Discusses the application of predictive control in motordrives, with several examples and case studies
* Matlab is included on a complementary website so the reader canrun their own simulations

From 2001 to 2004 he wasDirector of the Department of Electronics Engineering of the sameuniversity. In 1996 he was responsible for the Mining Division ofSiemens Corporation, Santiago, Chile. He has extensive consultingexperience in the mining industry, particularly in the applicationof large drives.Professor Rodriguez' research group wasrecoginized as one of the two Centers of Excellence in Engineeringin Chile from 2005 to 2008. He has directed more than 40 R&Dprojects in the field of industrial electronics, and his mainresearch interests include multilevel inverters, new convertertopologies, control of power converters and adjustable-speeddrives. He has co-authored more than 250 journal and conferencepapers and contributed one book chapter. Since 2002 he has beenactive associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on PowerElectronics and IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics. Hereceived the Best Paper Award from the former in 2007.
Patricio Cortés, Universidad Técnica FedericoSanta María, Chile Dr Cortes joined the ElectronicsEngineering Department UTFSM in 2003, where he is currentlyResearch Associate. His main research interests include powerelectronics, adjustable speed drives and predictive control. He hasauthored over 30 journal and conference papers, most of them in thearea of predictive control in power electronics. Dr Cortes receivedthe Best Paper Award from the IEEE Transactions on IndustrialElectronics in 2007.
