The term “places of remembrance” spread at a remarkable rate. Pierre Noras “Lieux de Mémoire” had hardly been published when the term reached Germany and, though used hesitantly at first, since the publication of Deutsche Erinnerungsorte (“German Places of Remembrance”) by Étienne François and Hagen Schulze it has been used practically nationwide. Meanwhile, not only in history, but also in its neighbouring disciplines and media studies, it is so ubiquitous that many are tired of hearing it. Setting out from the irritation that this seemingly geographically tangible term has triggered, the author first investigates Pierre Nora’s original concept, tracing its path through the German-language history sciences. There are extensive collections of national places of remembrance and regional and local surveys; the concept was critically analysed, but also diluted through unreflected use. This study aims to establish whether the term promises to be of any further benefit.>
