This book uses corpus-based discourse analytical techniques to examine online and face-to-face interactions in a Language Teacher Education program by assessing the formation and practices of a community of practice. Elaine Riordan’s study evaluates the role played by discussions between student teachers and a peer tutor in terms of identity formation, articulating narratives, reflective practices, and maintaining affective relationships. Riordan brings theories of pragmatics together with corpus linguistics in order to demonstrate how corpus linguistics can offer a richer picture of the affective and pragmatic features of student teacher discourse in real and online worlds, proposing that corpus linguistics can enhance the study of pragmatics in LTE. Consequently, this book aims to advance corpus-based methodologies in terms of combining corpus linguistics with discourse analysis (as well as interview and survey data) and theoretical methodologies (pragmatics, and social learning with CoPs) in a mixed-methods approach.
