In this essay collection Johann Georg Hamann’s thesis of 'God as author' is interpreted and put into a wider literary context. The relationship between speaking, hearing and seeing is examined in a theological and eschatological manner. Hamann’s idea on the last supper and on the 'Sacrament of speech' are put into a relationship with the importance of eating and drinking. The Narcissus episode of Ovid’s ' Metamorphoses' were interpreted by Hamann in a christological manner. As a connoisseur of the Hebrews, he wrote a critical review on the comment of Johann David Michaelis (Göttingen School of History). Joachim Ringleben analyses the meaning of Hamann as an of the most important theological thinkers after Luther, whose speech theology influenced Kierkegaard among others.
