As well as the key case study of California in the United States, cases from Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Taiwan, China, and the United Kingdom show how governments and stakeholders have bridged the gap between the vision and the realities of connecting metropolitan regions through HSR. The cases also illustrate how HSR has been used to promote economic development, smart growth and sustainability, in some cases more successfully than others.
