This 'Guideline' addresses the clinical and laboratory features of transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) as well as its management. TRALI is a life-threatening complication of transfusion that is clinically indistinguishable from the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), but which has a more favorable prognosis. Nevertheless, in the developed nations, it is the second or third most common cause of death from transfusion. The Scientific Section Coordinating Committee (SSCC) oversaw the development of this 'Guideline' that serves to advance patient safety.
