The adjective „greater“ in the title describes the length of the dialogue, compared to the shorter one of the same designation. The unknown author will surely have known both Plato (427-347) and Aristotle (384-322). With this volume he accords us a look at life in the early Academy.In the first half of the dialogue, Socrates and the well-known scholar Hippias from Elis talk about the question of what beauty is. The style is for the most part similar to that found in the early dialogues of Plato. The second half of the dialogue, particularly the remarks concerning distributive and collective characteristics, reflects discussions about problems of interest at that time in the Academy.

In this text a member of the Platonic Academy who is influenced by Plato’s early dialogues fabricates a conservation that Socrates has with the renowned sophist Hippias from Elis about the question what beauty is. The author, who evidently could not have known Socrates or Hippias, is dependent in his work on information from Plato, thus giving us a first glimpse, on the one hand, into the Plato reception and, on the other hand, when he has his interlocutors discuss distributive and collective properties, into the intellectual life of the Academy.>

Platon, 427-347 v. Chr., stammte aus adeligem Geschlecht und zählt zu den bedeutendsten griechischen Philosophen. Er war entscheidend von seinem Lehrer Sokrates geprägt. Nach dessen Tod begab er sich auf Reisen, doch scheiterten seine Hoffnungen, in Syrakus sein Staatsideal zu verwirklichen. Nach seiner Rückkehr gründete er in Athen seine Philosophenschule, die Akademie.
