Energy Efficiency Applications in Buildings presents an investigation into the energy use and measures to improve the energy efficiency of existing building stock in the UK. The aim of this research is to assess the domestic energy use of statistically representative residential buildings and their occupants’ thermal comfort by considering the significant impact of overheating risks on energy consumption and occupants’ well-being.

Divided into two volumes, the books present energy consumption and thermal comfort in the construction sector as a complex socio-technical problem that involves the analysis of an intrinsic interrelationship amongst dwellings, occupants and the environment. Using case studies, the authors demonstrate the significance of improving energy efficiency on the impact on occupants of long-term heatwaves in the summer.

Additionally, the volumes demonstrate how dynamic thermal energy simulation can be used as a learning laboratory for future trends in housing energy consumption reduction. Volume 1: Theories, Methods, and Tools presents the background to the research and the assessment methods and tools adopted by the research team. Volume 2: Performance evaluation and retrofitting strategies describes the case studies and building performance and post occupancy evaluations, before making strategic policy and retrofitting recommendations.

The research and roadmap presented in these volumes can be used as a guidance tool for building energy modelling and performance simulation, enabling architects, building engineers and other practitioners to close the gap between the current understanding and the actual performance of existing building stocks.

Bertug Ozarisoy is an architect and expert in building energy modelling both in the UK and Cyprus. His research focuses on understanding the theory between architecture and energy policy design in conjunction with exploring the impact of passive cooling systems on domestic energy use and households’ thermal comfort. Dr. Ozarisoy has an intensive 10 years’ experience in teaching, research, and architectural practice. He was initially involved in the BSc (Hons) in Construction Management programme at the University of East London (UEL) between September 2016–2018. He has developed teaching skills to demonstrate significant intellectual input to the students’ technical drawings and monitor their learning adaptability and integration to the ‘Construction Technology and Materials’ module. He authored over 30 journals and conference papers relevant to the building engineering field and assisted with research projects in the Sustainable Development of the Built Environment (SDBE) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Europe. Currently, Dr. Ozarisoy is a Lecturer in Technology in the School of the Built Environment and Architecture, in London South Bank University. He continues his research on the development of neutral adaptive thermal comfort benchmarking to contribute to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Global Thermal Comfort Database II. Prof. Dr. Hasim Altan is Professor of Sustainable Design and Architectural Engineering in the Department of Architecture, College of Architecture and Design in Khobar, Saudi Arabia. He is a Chartered Architect (RIBA) and a Chartered Engineer (CIBSE) with over 20 years of academic and practice experience in the field of Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) in the Built Environment in UK, Europe, Middle East, and North Africa (MENA) regions. Prof. Dr. Altan sits on several editorial boards and reviews project proposals for the European Commission, UK Research Councils, and Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) by Qatar Foundation. Since 2004, he has, singly or jointly, secured and directed 32 research grants worth over £21 million. He is a founding member of the International Network on Zero Energy Mass Custom Home (ZEMCH), which has so far organised eight international conferences, several design workshops, and numerous technical visits. As well as having supervised 17 successful PhD students, Prof. Dr. Altan has published over 280 refereed international journal and conference papers, technical reports, edited books and chapters and editorials in related fields. Dr. Sahar Zahiri is a Research Fellow in Sustainable Building Performance at the Low Carbon Building Research Group, School of Architecture, Oxford Brookes University. Sahar’s practical and research skills lie in low carbon and low energy building design, passive design, building performance and thermal comfort. She is also interested in smart buildings and technologies, as well as building adaptation for climate change. Prior to join Oxford Brookes University, Sahar worked as a Research Associate at the School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering, University of East London on a British Council Newton Institutional Links funded project titled ‘Building Capacity for Sustainable Development of the Built Environment’. She worked closely with Dr Heba Elsharkawy a Principal Investigator of the project on research and the other project related activities that aimed to develop education for sustainability in Egypt and also to identify appropriate retrofit strategies for social housing tower blocks in London Borough of Newham to reduce energy use and overheating risk. Sahar also worked as a teaching assistant and demonstrator at the School of Architecture, University of Sheffield, where she also got PhD in Architecture that focused on improving building performance of school buildings, as well as MArch in Sustainable Architectural Studies. Assist. Prof. Young Ki Kim obtained a BEng degree in School of Architecture in South Korea (1995 – 2002). He holds an MSc degree (2005) in Environmental Design and Engineering from the University College London (UCL). He finished his PhD degree at the University of Sheffield with the title of thesis “Adapting the UK Housing to Climate Change: Energy Consumption and Overheating”. He was a Research Associate, Teaching Fellow and Computer Simulation Expert in the Building Environments Analysis Unit (BEAU) in the School of Architecture at the University of Sheffield (2007 - 2014). Dr. Wei Shi has received his doctorate degree in Architecture, Sustainability, at the University of East London in 2019. The research is originated from the collaboration between the local authority and the university, aiming to increase the energy efficiency of numerous social housings. His research focuses on the soft landing of the roll-out of the government’s social housing refurbishment schemes and investigates the downside of it. By adopting a mixed research methodology, a number of guidance and advice informing for the success of future similar schemes were developed and presented to the local authority. Having completed his courses of Professional Practice Architecture (Part III), Professional Diploma in Architecture (Part II), and BA Architecture (Part I), Wei is now a RIBA registered architect working at Fereday Pollard Architects since 2019. In the residential work, Wei has been involved in design development, checking compliance with Building Regulations and advanced the production of drawings for their submission for planning approval. In addition, Wei has been involved in several transport and infrastructure projects from their inception through to detail design. Wei, is a very experience user of AECOsim CAD software and the production of co-ordinated 3D models and drawings, Wei is familiar with the Network Rail Assurance process and relevant design standards associated with transport infrastructure.
