1. Why did You choose this topic?

Our book is the outcome of a scientific research project called ›Translating and Framing‹ at the University of Hamburg/ the Academy of Fine Arts Hamburg. This research project made use of different academic approaches and focussed on various medial transformations. Taking as our starting point the insight that culture is always already situated and brings about different cultural communities according to their media practices, we chose the title 'Situated in translations. Cultural communities and media practices'.

2. What new perspectives does your book offer?

The aim of our contributions is to gauge the scope of existing translation theories for an expanded media studies, combining research on the arts, media and cultural as well as performance studies. We are especially interested in a broad range of media including the body and its movement, voice, literature, film, and graphic novels. And we also ask: Are there other, non-Western or unseen and unheard ways of translating whose cultural communities we overlook due to our standardised perspectives?

3. What makes your topic relevant for current research debates?

Our topic is relevant for current scientific research debates not only because it widens the concept of translation and cultural situatedness and applies them to different media practices, but because it also includes reflections on non-Western philosophical concepts and hybrid art works, such as Afro-Arabic film, postcolonially inspired graphic novels and documentary films, intercultural dance performances and hybrid art works.

4. Choose one person you would like to discuss your book with!

I would like to discuss this book with the cultural theorist Rey Chow herself situated between the Chinese and the US-American culture. She is aware of the intercultural situatedness of verbal and visual translations and of the effects of media practices concerning the constitution of cultural communities.

5. Your book summary in one sentence:

Our book is a journey through different processes of media translations and their inevitable intercultural situatedness.
