Global economic and social forces are affecting everyone, everywhere. However, their influence is shaped by local communities' interpretation of these forces and responses to them. Tim O'Riordan is Associate Director of the Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment and Professor of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia. He is an adviser to business and environment initiatives and is a member of the UK Sustainable Development Commission. His publications include Exotaxation (Earthscan, 1997), Interpreting the Precautionary Principle (Earthscan, 1994), the Transition to Sustainability (Earthscan, 1998) and Environmental Science for Environmental Management (Prentice-Hall, 2000).
