Everyone who knows the myth of Phaethon, the unlucky charioteer, will certainly remember the well-known verses from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Yet what do we know about the surviving fragments of Euripides' Phaethon? When Goethe read this text in 1821, he thought the fragments were evidence of one of the poet's most extraordinary works. Silvia Onori's volume presents a new critical-exegetical commentary on Euripides' Phaethon: Based on the text edited by Richard Kannicht, alongside each fragment we find a full list of bibliographical references, an analysis of the context of the quotation, an Italian translation, and an exegetical commentary. The introduction presents the sources for every fragment, a possible reconstruction of the drama, a hypothesis on its origin and the significance of the myth. The volume is completed by an appendix on the modern and contemporary revision of the myth.

Über Autor(innen)

Silvia Onori graduated from Sapienza-University of Rome in 2017 and obtained her PhD in Greek Literature in 2021 at the University of Cassino under the supervision of Prof. Michele Napolitano with a thesis on Euripides' Phaethon. Her studies focus on tragic theatre, in particular on Euripides' works. She currently teaches Greek and Latin language and culture at the high school.

Silvia Onori si è laureata presso Sapienza - Università di Roma nel 2017 e ha conseguito il dottorato in Letteratura greca nel 2021 presso l'Università di Cassino e del Lazio Meridionale sotto la supervisione del prof. Michele Napolitano con una tesi sul Fetonte di Euripide. I suoi studi si concentrano sul teatro tragico, in particolare sulla produzione euripidea, integra e frammentaria. Attualmente è docente di lingua e cultura greca e latina al liceo classico.
