During the consecration of the Myron (Holy Chrism), celebrated bby the Coptic Patriarch Gabriel IV (1370-1378) at the Monaster of Saint Macarius (in the Desert of Scetis) in 1374 A.D., Bishop Athanasius of Qous was given the task of composing a written description of the way in which that consecration was carried out.
He did this with great care, transcribing many of the varied liturgical hymns that had been sung during the services. He also provides a careful description of the itinerary taken from Cairo to Scetis, the personalities present, and many other details of the event. Athanasius’ text is published here for the first time, together with an introduction, a French translation and notes, as well as indices designed to help the reader to take full advantage of this unique document, which illustrates an essential moment in Coptic liturgical life. It presents a kind of “slice of the social life” of 14th century Coptic Christians, and of the difficulties with which they had to deal.
