About the Authors


Melber, Leah M.
Leah M. Melber, Ph.D. has nearly 20 years experience within informal and formal science education. She holds a BA in Zoology, an MA in education together with a multiple subject teaching credential for the state of California, and a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Southern California. She has presented widely on inquiry-based instruction and effective methods of connecting with cultural institutions such as museums. In addition to numerous journal articles she has written on this topic, she has recently published a book titled “Informal Learning and Field Trips”. She was awarded the 2001 Informal Educator Award through the California Science Teachers Association. She joined the staff of Lincoln Park Zoo in December of 2008.

Hunter, Alyce A.
Alyce Hunter, Ed.D. has been an administrator and teacher in New Jersey public schools for over twenty five years. She has also taught and continues to teach graduate level courses in educational leadership, social studies education, literacy,content area literacy, and special education. She is affiliated with Wagner College, Rutgers University, Centenary College, and Lesley University. She has published four other books: one on teacher portfolios, one on mentoring, and two on differentiated instruction in the English/language arts classroom.
Additionally Dr. Hunter has written and is a frequent presenter of a workshop she wrote on differentiation of instruction in middle schools for Pre-AP College Board. She has written numerous articles that have appeared in many national publications.
