Sich in Ostdeutschland als Erwachsener taufen zu lassen, ist recht unkonventionell. Warum es dazu kommt, erläutert dieses Buch. Es beleuchtet bei ›vormals Konfessionslosen‹ lebensgeschichtliche Hintergründe, die ihr Interesse an Religion anbahnten und die letztlich zur Taufe führten. Mittels biographischer Interviews, gesprächslinguistischer und soziologisch-rekonstruktiver Methodik werden Gegenstandsbereiche untersucht, in denen entsprechende Entwicklungen stattfanden. Aus einzelnen Bedeutungsstrukturen und größeren Strukturkomplexen sind mögliche Entwicklungsschritte hin zur Taufe sowie Gründe für sie dargelegt: Konfessionslose Erwachsene lassen sich nicht ohne religiöse Vorerfahrungen taufen. Gegenstand dieser Erfahrungen ist das Zurechtkommen in ungünstigen Lebensumständen. Die Taufe resultiert daher aus einem Ordnungsdenken, mit dem Distanz dazu bewerkstelligt werden soll.

To be baptized as adult in Eastern Germany is rather unconventional. The way leading to baptism is described in this book. It sheds a light on the biographical backgrounds of formerly »non-denominational« individuals that initiated their interest in religion and eventually lead to their baptism. Fields in which these developments took place get analyzed by means of biographical interviews and conversational linguistic and sociological reconstructive methods. Individual structures of meaning and larger structural complexes help to understand the development steps and the motivations to get baptized: non-denominational adults don’t let themselves be baptized without former religious experiences. These experiences include the overcoming of unfavorable living conditions. Baptism is therefore also the result of a structuring thinking which tries to create distance.
