Southeast Asia is one of the most diverse regions in the world, hosting a wide range of languages, ethnicities, religions, economics, ecosystems and political systems. Amidst this diversity however has been a common desire to develop, providing a uniting theme across landscapes of difference. This comprehensive Handbook traces the experiences of diverse actors in Southeast Asia in their pursuit of development, while recognising the multiple meanings that are attached to this term. An Introduction provides a theoretical and thematic synthesis, and the Handbook is then divided into six sections:
- Approaching Southeast Asian development
- Spaces of Development in Southeast Asia
- Development institutions
- Economies and development
- People and development
- Environment and development
The first section highlights a framing for thinking about development in Southeast Asia, historically situating development in the region. The second section explores how development in spatialised, comparing the different types of processes and challenges emerging in urban, rural and more natural areas. In the third section chapters discuss how development is governed and enacted, looking at both external actors such as the Word Bank and the International Monetary Fund, as well as regional and domestic institutions. The fourth section focuses on economic processes and challenges in the region. The final two sections concentrate on people and environment, how societies are changing with development and the evolving human-environment relations in Southeast Asia.
together an international group of leading scholars, the Handbook presents a cutting edge overview of the diversity of experiences that development enables in the region. It is an interdisciplinary resource for students, scholars and policymakers with an interest in Southeast Asian Studies, Development Studies and Environmental Studies.
