Insects are more similar in structure and physiology to mammals than plants or fungi. Consequently, insecticides are often of greater toxicity to mammals than herbicides. However, some insecticides are targeted at structures or hormonal systems specific to insects so are less harmful but can still be mildly haematotoxic. This book specifically addresses insecticide toxicology in mammals. It starts with general issues relating to the mammalian toxicity of insecticides, including target and non-target specificity, nomenclature and metabolism of insecticides. It then goes on to discuss specific types of insecticide.

The considerable expertise of the Editor and authors has produced a high quality and enormously relevant reference text which will be of much use to both academics and practising industrialists.

Waters, Mike D
Michael D. Waters, holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill and a B.S. in Pre-medicine (Chemistry and Biology) from Davidson College. He is a former government scientist with more than 35 years of experience in research and research management positions at EPA and NIH/NIEHS and six years of private sector experience as Chief Scientific Officer at Integrated Laboratory Systems, Inc. His research interests have centered on the evaluation of chemically-induced mutations and altered molecular expression in the etiology of genetic disease. He is a widely-published scientist having published well over 100 peer-reviewed in authoritative international scientific journals. He has edited Mutation Research-Reviews for nearly 20 years and has held adjunct professorships at both the University of North Carolina and at Duke University for many years. He served as President of both the Environmental Mutagen Society and the International Association of Environmental Mutagen Societies (now the Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Society and the International Association of Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Societies, with more than seven thousand members worldwide). The databases he has developed and a number of his publications are recognized as important advances that have significantly impacted the fields of genetic toxicology, carcinogenesis, toxicogenomics, and risk assessment.

Tim Marrs is a consulting toxicologist for Edentox. He is also consulting clinical toxicologist at the West Midlands Poisons Unit in Birmingham, UK. He was formerly chief toxicologist at the Food Standards Agency in London, and before that Senior Medical Officer at the Department of Health, in charge of a team which dealt with human health aspects of pesticides and veterinary medicines. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and the Royal College of Physicians of London and has doctorates in both medicine and science. He has also been the editor of a number of books including Pesticides Toxicology and International Regulation, Organophosphates and Health and General and Applied Toxicology, in its 3rd edition, which was published (by Wiley) in November 2009. Most recently (2012), he has edited Mammalian Toxicology of Insecticides for the Royal Society of Chemistry. He is a member of a number of UK government committees and has served on various international bodies.
