In this issue of 'Mineral and Electrolyte Metabolism' an international group of experts summarizes our current knowledge of the influence of the spectrum of renal diseases on nutritional status and highlights areas for future research. It begins with a review of the normal physiologic responses to alterations in protein intake and evidence that activation of specific intracellular pathways is responsible for increased protein and amino acid degradation in many pathologic states, including uremia.
