What This Book Can Do For You “What ineffable twaddle!” I cried…. “What is it?” asked Sherlock Holmes. “Why this article.” I said, “…it is evidently the theory of some armchair lounger who evolves all these neat little paradoxes in the seclusion of his own study. It is not practical. I should like to see him clapped down in a third class carriage on the underground, and asked to give the trades of all his fellow travellers. I would lay a thousand to one against him.” “You would lose your money.” Sherlock Holmes remarked calmly. “As for the article I wrote it myself.” Sherlock Holmes, A Study in Scarlet Renowned author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created the great fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. Dr. John H. Watson, Holmes’s fictional friend and sidekick, chronicled 4 novels and 56 short stories in which Sherlock Holmes appeared.1 The inspiration for Holmes’s fictional character came from Doyle’s association with Professor Joseph Bell. Mr. Bell was a highly respected doctor in the late 19th Century. Doctor Bell’s ability to instantly size-up his students inspired Doyle. Doyle then gave Holmes one of his greatest detective skills. In several stories, Doyle uses Holmes’s ability to size up strangers to astonish and fascinate his readers. Over a hundred years later, readers remain fascinated with the Sherlock Holmes stories and his ability to instantly size up strangers. What person upon meeting a stranger would not want to instantly tell if he or she is lying? Or know his or her background, job, age or other personal traits? Or tell where he recently came from or know his prior activities? Sizing up a stranger, as defined in this book, is the ability to discover facts and details about a person with just a glance. Authors have written many articles and books about Holmes’s investigative methods. Few, however, have focused in depth on his amazing skill in evaluating people. This is the first book, which will show readers, step by step, how to use the Holmes method to instantly size up strangers in everyday life. It will answer critics who believe that the average person cannot apply Holmes’s method in the real world. These critics claim that Holmes’s method is not practical in the 21st Century. They argue the world has changed and Holmes would not find it as easy to size up strangers today. They say class distinctions no longer limit people as in Victorian times. They contend Holmes is a fictional character and you cannot do what he did in real life. They allege that Doyle created fictional stories designed to always make Holmes’s methods work. They assert it is much harder today to interpret clues as Holmes did when meeting strangers. They state the average person is not a genius like Holmes and cannot follow his methods. This book takes the position that anyone can use the Sherlock Holmes Method to size up strangers. All you need to know is the ‘secret’ upon which Holmes based his method. The secret to the Sherlock Holmes Method is so obvious most people have overlooked it. Yet, the book does not tell you the secret upfront. Why? The answer is because for some strange reason the secret works better when you discover it for yourself. Holmes himself realized this fact after he explained to his shocked clients how he knew things about them. His clients then downplayed his great skill once he revealed how he did it. This book will not make that same mistake. Instead, the book will challenge you to find the secret and recognize it for yourself. The book will help you find and recognize the secret by providing you with several clues. In A Case of Identity, Sherlock Holmes said, “It has long been an axiom of mine that the little things are infinitely the most important.” This first clue may help you recognize the secret when it flashes within your mind while you are reading. You may discover the secret in the first chapter or the last chapter. But you can only uncover the secret by actively searching for it. As you search, remember that the secret already exists within your own mind. The first nine chapters will lead you to the secret. Each chapter in the book contains additional clues to the secret and is like pieces to a jigsaw puzzle. Use the pieces to put the puzzle together and figure the secret out. Chapters 10 and 11 will show you how to ‘read’ an unknown owner’s personal property and handwriting just as Sherlock Holmes did. In Chapter 12, you will learn specific exercises to improve your natural abilities to use Holmes’s method in everyday life. Almost everyone is born with the same natural ability as Sherlock Holmes. In fact, we all use his method in our daily lives to read both people and inanimate objects. Some people, however, are better at it than others. This book will show you how to develop Holmes’s method to your fullest potential. But for the tips in the book to work, you must make an effort and practice them each day. Chapter 12 is perhaps the most important chapter in the book. It will train you to improve your abilities to their fullest potential. Read the entire book to discover the secret mentioned earlier. Practice the exercises in Chapter 12 to improve your skills. Then go out into the world and apply the Holmes method. When you go out into the world, you will find that the Holmesian method is different from cold reading. Why? The answer is because it does not rely on manipulating a person to get clues to his or her background. It is different from astrology. Why? The answer is because it does not rely on stars in the sky to help you understand human behavior. It is different from fortune telling or psychic reading. Why? The answer is because it does not rely on a so-called supernatural ability to read people. The Sherlock Holmes’ Method is a practical way to evaluate strangers. It relies on asking questions and using principles. It does not rely on mystical tricks but natural abilities most people already possess. Teachers, doctors, lawyers, reporters, interviewers, supervisors, cab drivers, waiters, bartenders, politicians, detectives — anyone dealing with the public on a daily basis uses the Holmesian method. Most of them, however, do not even realize they are using it. Once you realize and use the questions and principles in this book, your ability to evaluate strangers will improve. You will uncover hidden personality traits, motives and background information about the strangers you meet. You will gain new insight into people — once you learn what to look for. This book will teach you how and where to look. You will learn how Holmes applied these practical questions and principles to easily and quickly see through strangers. You will find the questions and principles in this book simple to understand and easy to use. Whether you are a novice with little experience or an expert with lots of it, you will find useful tips in the book that you can apply in your everyday encounters with strangers you meet. But no matter what your experience level, as you read, remember that to find the secret you must actively search for it. In The Adventure of Black Peter, Sherlock Holmes said, “…as long as the criminal remains upon two legs so must there be some indentation, some abrasion, some trifling displacement which can be detected by the scientific searcher.” What Holmes meant is people must leave trace evidence about themselves that reveals who they are. Humans are thinking beings. We strive to express ourselves, to release what is inside of us. It is in our nature to leave clues about who we are to others — whether we want to or not. Once you understand this, your search for the secret will not be in vain. But during your search, you will only find the secret once you also understand how everything is connected. In A Study in Scarlet, Sherlock Holmes said: “…all life is a great chain, the nature of which becomes known whenever we are shown a single link of it.” Holmes believed people always leak clues about themselves to others in their everyday activities. He believed the clues are ‘links’ that reveal who the people are. Sherlock Holmes recognized that everything pertaining to a person — no matter how seemingly insignificant — could tell you something about that person. A stranger’s clothes, a person’s behavior, an individual’s hands — all tell a story. Everything about the person links together like a chain. It all reveals his or her personal history, background and prior activities — but only if you know what to look for. Pay attention to trifles! Keep this clue constantly in mind during your search and you will recognize the secret the moment you come upon it in any of the upcoming chapters. Then you will unlock the secret’s full power and instantly size up any stranger you...
