The monograph has been conceived as a retrospective, critical examination of scholarly work on SLA strategies at the levels of theory and research. The ultimate aim of this retrospective, critical examination is twofold: (i) to assess the (potential) contribution of strategy research to SLA theory and pedagogy, as well as to examine the reasons for the apparent dissociation between both fields; and (ii) to contribute to the advance of strategy research (in terms of its theoretical foundation and research methodology) as a necessary step to make strategy research more central to the SLA research agenda, particularly sociocognitively-oriented SLA research. We believe this is the first time a critical and comprehensive assessment of strategy research in terms of its potential contribution to SLA theory and pedagogy has been undertaken.
