Increasing dimensions and production volumes of prepreg based composite parts led to the development of Out-of-Autoclave manufacturing (OoA) as a cost-effective alternative to the conventional Autoclave consolidation.
This work proposes a multi-physics framework for simulating the Out-of-Autoclave process, experimentally validated with the manufacturing of flat monolithic carbon-epoxy demonstrators. The simulation couples the transient airflow through the partially saturated prepreg taking place during isothermal and non-isothermal cure cycles OoA and its influence on the local macroscopic resin front progression via pressure boundary conditions.
The toolkit can be used to speed-up material down-selection and virtual testing of production cycles used for manufacturing of composite parts with acceptable quality outside the Autoclave.
