Im vorliegenden Band wird vom Autor/ Herausgeber die in zugleich mehrfacher Hinsicht bedeutsame, erhaltene Korrespondenz zwischen dem bekannten Altaisten, Tungusologen Turkologen, Dravidologen etc. Karl Heinrich Menges (1908-1999) und dem („Anti”-)Altaisten, Turkologen, Tungusologen, etc. Gerhard Doerfer (1920-2003) wiedergegeben. Einerseits dokumentieren diese Materialien einen rund dreißigjährigen Kontakt zwischen den beiden Ausnahmegelehrten und andererseits spiegelt dieser einen Austausch von Ideen zwischen dem Lehrer (Menges) und seinem Schüler (Doerfer), wie sie teilweise kaum gegensätzlicher sein könnten (etwa die Haltungen in der „Altaischen Frage”) aus mehr als drei Jahrzehnten wider. Darüber hinaus beinhalten die Materialien zahllose für die Geschichte der Altaistik, der „Societas Uralo-Altaica” und den Wissenschaftsbetrieb der betreffenden Forschungsfelder von den 1950er bis 1980er Jahren relevante Informationen.
In the volume, the editor/ author presents the correspondencies between the famous Altaist, Tungusologist, Turcologist, Dravidologist etc. Karl Heinrich Menges (1908-1999) and the („Anti”-)Altaist, Turcologist, Tungusologist etc. Gerhard Doerfer (1920-2003) which are of interest in many ways. On one side they document the contacts between two outstanding scholars for around three decades and on the other hand, the materials given in the volume show us the exchange of contrarely opinions and different points of view on ideas (such as the „Altaische Frage”) between a teacher (Menges) and his student (Doerfer) for more than 30 years. Furthermore the materials contain a lot of important information for the history of Altaic studies, the „Societas Uralo-Altaica” and the scientific activities in the respective fields in the 1950s to 1980s.
