Anatomy is intrinsically a three-dimensional and visual discipline. Anatomical education is therefore primarily delivered using physical and digital three-dimensional visual approaches to support student understanding of anatomy, including human body donor specimens and technology-enhanced learning resources. The Trans-European Pedagogic Anatomy Research Group (TEPARG) was founded in 2003 to promote scholarly, research-informed, and evidence-based approaches to the design and implementation of anatomical education. TEPARG brings together enthusiastic anatomy teachers and pedagogic researchers from across Europe and beyond to share good practice and create new projects in support of anatomical education.

The work presented in this volume demonstrates careful consideration by the authors of several key areas within the current complex landscape of international anatomical education. This volume is presented in two subthemes, with the first section concerning broad considerations of modern anatomy curricula in England, Scotland, Wales, and Austria, and the second section involving discussion of pedagogic innovations for the delivery of anatomical education to learners and to the wider public in Italy, Spain, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

The work presented in this volume will have implications for anatomical educators and pedagogic researchers in the anatomical sciences who are seeking to develop their own anatomy curricula, and to implement effective, evidence-based, and research informed visualization strategies and innovations into their teaching.

Professor Iain D. Keenan, B.Sc., (Hons.), Ph.D., M.Med.Ed., S.F.H.E.A., N.T.F., F.A.S

As Professor of Anatomical Education at the School of Medicine, Newcastle University, U.K, Professor Keenan has taught gross anatomy, histology, and embryology for medical, medical sciences, and healthcare professions degree programmes in the Faculty of Medical Sciences since 2012. Professor Keenan’s research involves development and investigation of digital visualisation and art-based learning approaches in anatomical education, which has informed Professor Keenan’s leadership of the global ‘’ and ‘’ courses in collaboration with Leonard Shapiro at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Professor Keenan has authored several high-profile publications in esteemed international anatomical education journals, has authored several chapters in , and has edited a previous volume in the series. Professor Keenan’s wide-ranging contributions to anatomical education have been recognised in the award of a National Teaching Fellowship (2020) and Fellowship of the Anatomical Society (2021). Professor Keenan has been a TEPARG member since 2018, winning the best presentation prize at the TEPARG conference that year. Professor Keenan was first appointed Honorary Secretary of TEPARG in 2021 and began a second term in 2024.

Professor Isabel Stabile, FRCOG., Ph.D.

Following a long career in academic medicine in the UK and the US, where she worked for 20 years. She is the author of over 80 publications and six books. Professor Stabile is currently engaged as full Professor in the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the University of Malta. She also has a part-time private practice as a gynaecologist. During her tenure at Florida State University in the US, she was responsible for generating over $10,000,000 USD in research funding which has led to numerous publications as well as international awards. She was also responsible for re-designing the clinical curriculum in the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and the introduction of new strategies to facilitate learning. The final product is student-centered, vertically and horizontally integrated and builds on the success of the biomedical sciences curriculum jointly developed previously. Prof. Stabile is the immediate past president of TEPARG.

Dr Asha Venkatesh, M.B.B.S, PGDip (Ophth), MSc (Clinical Education), SFHEA, FAS

Following a brief career in Clinical Ophthalmology in India, Dr Venkatesh now works as a Senior Lecturer in Anatomy at the University of Aberdeen, UK. In addition to teaching gross anatomy, histology and embryology, she is interested in anatomy assessment, having steered the move to platform-based assessment of Anatomy at the University of Aberdeen. She has won three University-level excellence awards for her teaching and supervision. Dr Venkatesh is also the Equality Diversity and Inclusion lead of her School and is passionate about inclusive Anatomy education. Externally she is the Membership Officer of the Anatomical Society (UK and Ireland) participating in the charitable actions of this learned society, Since 2022, she has represented the Anatomical Society at TEPARG.
