[Under one Christ! But in Conflict? – On Baptism and Recognition in Ecumenical Intentione]
In 2007, the declaration on mutual recognition of »Christian Baptism« was signed in Magdeburg by many ACK churches, and a »basic common understanding« was established. At the same time, there are still substantial differences between the churches on many doctrinal issues–even concerning baptism. This book looks into this: How is such simultaneity between consensus and dissensus, between what is common and what is different–both within a church or confessional family, and between different denominations–to be understood and evaluated? What then does »recognition« actually mean? Does »recognition« necessarily presuppose the identity of the other practice or interpretation with one's own church practice and interpretation? Or does »recognition« even mean that precisely the other is recognized as other? And what is the role of theological dispute in all this?
