This special issue presents recent work from the frontiers of stem cell research, highlighting developments in the rapidly evolving fields of embryonal and adult stem cell biology and tackling key issues relevant to the development of novel therapies. From the arena of basic research, special consideration is given to the gene expression patterns and regulatory networks associated with maintaining potential and coordinating differentiation as well as to ways in which stem cells are influenced by surrounding cells in the niche, thus providing a view of both intrinsic and extrinsic control mechanisms which act together to determine cell fate.
On a more applied level, model applications of stem cell therapies in tissues such as muscle, nerve, liver and pancreas serve on the one hand to illustrate the enormous potential of stem cell therapy to regenerate disease-damaged tissue, and on the other hand to reveal the problems associated with translating these hopes into practice.
