This book is a compilation of the entire research work on the topic of Complex Binary Number System (CBNS) carried out by the author as the principal investigator and members of his research groups at various universities during the years 2000-2012. Pursuant to these efforts spanning several years, the realization of CBNS as a viable alternative to represent complex numbers in an “all-in-one” binary number format has become possible and efforts are underway to build computer hardware based on this unique number system.

It is hoped that this work will be of interest to anyone involved in computer arithmetic and digital logic design and kindle renewed enthusiasm among the engineers working in the areas of digital signal and image processing for developing newer and efficient algorithms and techniques incorporating CBNS.

Dr. Tariq Jamil is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), Oman. He joined SQU in September 2000 and before this he was a lecturer at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia and the University of Tasmania, Launceston, Australia. He has around 18 years of teaching experience. His recent teaching and research areas include computer architecture, parallel processing, computer arithmetic, and cryptography.
Dr. Jamil holds a B.Sc. (Hons) degree in electrical engineering from the NWFP University of Engineering and Technology, Pakistan obtained in 1989 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer engineering from the Florida Institute of Technology, USA obtained in 1992 and 1996, respectively.
Dr. Jamil has authored several publications in refereed international journals and conferences. He was also a visiting professor to COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Abbottabad, Pakistan during 2004. He received the award of ‘Best Paper’ for the research paper entitled ‘Hardware Implementation and Performance Evaluation of Complex Binary Adder Designs’, presented in the session on ‘Architectures, Tools, and Distributed Systems’ at the 7th World Multiconference on Systemics, Cybernetics, and Informatics (SCI 2003), held in Orlando, Florida, USA during July 27–30, 2003. He has also delivered an invited lecture on Complex Binary Number System at System-on-Chip (SoC) seminar, held in Tampere, Finland in November 2002.
Dr. Jamil is a recipient of the IEEE Computer Society/Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honor Society Award for Academic Excellence (1996), in recognition of excellent performance throughout academic career and for contribution to activities related to the computing discipline. In recognition of demonstrated outstanding achievement in a particular field of endeavour and significant contribution to the betterment of contemporary society, his biography has beenpublished in renowned directories such as Marquis’s Who’s Who in the World, USA; Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, USA; Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, USA; and IBC’s Dictionary of International Biography, UK.
Dr. Jamil is a senior member of IEEE, USA and a member of IEEE Computer Society, USA; IET, UK; a chartered engineer of the Engineering Council, UK; and a registered professional engineer, Pakistan. He has been Student Editor of IEEE Potentials (1995–1997), an ACM Students’ Chapter Sponsor and/or IEEE Students’ Branch Counselor at various universities in Pakistan (1997), Australia (1997–2000), and Oman (2001–2003).
