Drawing from Tangut philological sources and from the author's personal fieldwork on the closely related Rgyalrong languages, this book is the first application of the comparative method to the study of Tangut. It contains a detailed account of Tangut historical phonology within the proposed Macro-Rgyalrongic group, and over twenty new sound laws are proposed. It also discusses the issue of language classification and the position of Tangut in the Sino-Tibetan family.

He has published several articles in journals such as Diachronica, Lingua, Linguistic Typology and Linguistic Inquiry, and is the author of Jiarongyu Yanjiu (Minzu chubanshe, 2008). / Guillaume Jacques a obtenu son doctorat en 2004 à l'Université Paris VII Denis Diderot et est chargé de recherche au CNRS. Il a publié plusieurs articles dans des revues telles que Diachronica, Lingua, Linguistic Typology et Linguistic Inquiry, ainsi qu'une grammaire du Japhug (Minzu chubanshe, 2008).
