1. Why did you choose this topic?
The political crises and the environmental challenges we face require a change of perspective towards sustainability. This collection of essays provides examples of how political freedom is undermined, but also how it can be restored and strengthened,
2. What new perspectives does your book offer?
Hannah Arendt developed fundamental definitions of political action which I discuss using examples. The elements of the devastating decline of liberal politics as a result of lies and violence are contrasted with examples of personal responsibility, judgment, the institution of federalism which excludes arbitrary sovereignty, a cosmopolitanism that is not overexuberant, and finally a change of perspective towards nature.
3. What makes your topic relevant for current research debates?
Topics and method highlight the indispensable role of political philosophy for analyses of the crises of our time. The continuing research on Arendt provides impulses for a more profound definition of the elements of her republicanism, and also offers examples of further thinking inspired by Arendt. This is reinforced by an inter-disciplinary approach that facilitates a change of perspective, for example towards nature.
4. Choose one person you would like to discuss your book with!
I would choose Roger Berkowitz, director of the Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities at Bard College NY. because of his a critical spirit and the wide range of his activities.
5. Your book summary in one sentence:
The essays in the book address the crise of our time and the significance of Arendt's civic republicanism for the development of an understanding of sustainability in relation to nature and politics.
