From 1931 up to the early seventies, Heidegger recorded fabrics of his thinking in all in all thirty-four oilcloth notebooks, the so-called "Black Notebooks". While they sometimes discuss and expose themselves to the events of the day, these recordings also turn out to be something of a laboratory for philosophical experiments, so that, in their unmistakeable style, the "Black Notebooks" can best be described as philosophical diaries. In vol. 94, Heidegger at length examines his acceptance of a one-year rectorate at the University of Freiburg in 1933/34. It becomes clear that from the beginning Heidegger, notwithstanding his support of the political upheaval brought about by the National Socialists, has reservations about them. The eventual resignation from the office opens up new opportunities for the elaboration of the being-historical thinking, which considerably more than in Heidegger´s other writings is applied directly to everyday phenomena in religion, art and science. These assessments of the being-historical situation determine the character of these notebooks.
