This book focuses on the global issue of ethnic problems and examines the theory and practice of how China addresses its ethnic problems from a macro perspective, following the guidelines formulated by the working conference on ethnic affairs of the Central Committee of Chinese Communist Party in 2014. Based on comparative and empirical studies, it also analyzes specific solutions to ethnic problems in contemporary China, such as how the country has succeeded in redressing material inequalities among different ethnic groups, allowing these groups to share in the country’s development, and gain recognition and acceptance.

Über Autor(innen)

Shiyuan Hao, born in 1952 in the Autonomous Region of inner-Mongolia, is research fellow and CASS member, secretary general of the academic committee of CASS and director of the section of sociology, politics and laws, CASS. Mr. Hao also was selected as the MAS foreign member in 2013. He is also the chairman of China’s Anthropological Society and chairman of China’s World Ethnic Society. Mr. Hao’s major areas of study involve ethnic theory of Marxism, ethnic problems and policies of China and foreign countries, history of China’s ethnic people, ethnic groups in Taiwan. His representative works include Empire Hegemony and Balkan Flashpoint--Interpretation the Reality of Kosovo Based on the History of Yugoslavia, How Chinese Communist Party Manages the Ethnic Issues, Classification of People: A Dialogue on ‘Nation’ and ‘Ethnic Group’ Concept between China and the West, Ethnic Issues in Taiwan: from “Fan(?)” to “Aboriginal People”, etc.
