Als Naturwissenschaftler und Mediziner, Autor vielbändiger Kompendien und unermüdlicher Rezensent auch mathematischer, historischer, theologischer und geographischer Werke war Albrecht von Haller (1708–1777) einer der letzten Universalgelehrten. Als Verfasser des „Versuchs schweizerischer Gedichte“ (1732) gehört er zu den Wegbereitern der literarischen Aufklärung. Mit dem grossen Gedicht „Die Alpen“ bahnte er einem neuen Naturverständnis den Weg. An die Stelle theologischer Interpretationen treten genaue Beobachtung und eine innerweltliche Mythologie, die in der „ursprünglichen“ Lebensweise der Hirten und Sennen, lange vor Rousseau, ein Gegenbild zur Verderbtheit der „zivilisierten“ Welt entwirft.
Hallers Werk „Schweitzerische Gedichte“ wurde zu dessen Lebzeiten immer wieder neu aufgelegt und vom Autor selbst überarbeitet. Unter den verschiedenen Ausgaben ragt jene letzter Hand heraus, zu der von Haller kurz vor seinem Tod eine neue Vorrede verfasste. Sie ist die schönste und am reichsten illustrierte Edition der Gedichtsammlung, dabei die erste mit den reizenden Illustrationen des ins Berner Bürgerrecht aufgenommenen Balthasar Anton Duncker (1746–1807).
As a scientist and physician, the author of multi-volume compendia and a tireless reviewer of mathematical, historical, theological and geographical works, Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777) was one of the last universal scholars. His Versuch schweizerischer Gedichte puts him among the precursors of the literary Enlightenment. In his great poem Die Alpen he paved the way for a new understanding of nature. In place of theological interpretation he offers precise observations and an internal mythology which, long before Rousseau, establishes a contrast between the “authentic” lives of the Alpine herdsmen and the corruption of the “civilised” world.
Haller’s work Schweitzerische Gedichte went through many editions in his lifetime which he himself revised. Outstanding among these is the last edition that Haller prepared, to which he added a new preface shortly before his death. This is the most beautiful and most richly illustrated edition of the collection, and the first with the charming illustrations by Balthasar Anton Duncker (1746-1807).
