The foundation for Legal Knowledge Systems (JURIX) is a forum for research in Law and Computer Science in the Netherlands. This volume contains the proceedings of the seventeenth JURIX conference (JURIX 2004), which was held at the Harnack Haus of the Max Planck Society, in Berlin, Germany. Since 1988, JURIX has organized an annual international conference on current research in the field. Over the years the JURIX conference has become the European academic event in the area of ICT and Law. The effort to extend JURIX beyond The Netherlands and establish it as the leading European conference on legal knowledge systems is making progress. From 2002 the conference will be held outside of the Netherlands in the even years; that year in London, this year in Berlin. The papers in this publication focus on the topics of legal knowledge management and information retrieval; legal knowledge acquisition using natural language processing; legal ontologies; case-based reasoning; reasoning about evidence and legal reasoning support.
