John E. Gibson, PhD, was the Commonwealth DistinguishedProfessor of Systems Management at the School of Engineeringand Applied Science, University of Virginia, Charlottesville.He was the past dean of engineering at two universities: TheUniversity of Virginia and Oakland University. His research was inmanufactruring strategy and management and in total qualityleadership. Dr. Gibson received his PhD from Yale University.
William T. Scherer, PhD, is Professor in the Departmentof Systems and Information Engineering at the University ofVirginia where he teaches courses on systems engineering. Hehas authored and co-authored numerous publications on intelligentdecision support systems, combinatorial optimization, andstochastic control. He is an associate editor for InternationalAbstracts in Operations Research and reviewer for OperationsResearch, Annals of Operations Research, and IEEETrans-actions on Intelligent Transportation Systems(ITS). He has held the Lucien Carr III Professorship ofEngineering, recognition of his excellence in undergraduateeducation.
