This book explores the role of nanotechnology in improving air quality and environmental sustainability. It highlights the use of advanced nanomaterials such as nano-sensors, nano-catalysts, nanomembranes, and nano-biomaterials in pollution detection, monitoring, prevention, and remediation.

Air quality is a critical component of public health and ecological balance. Rapid industrialization, urban expansion, and natural calamities have significantly increased the levels of air pollutants, posing serious risks to humans and ecosystems. Traditional methods of air purification and monitoring often fall short in managing the scale and complexity of modern pollutants. Nanotechnology provides a transformative approach, offering materials and devices with unique properties such as high reactivity, sensitivity, and durability. This book presents a comprehensive overview of current nanotechnological interventions in air quality management. It discusses the scientific basis, material properties, applications, and limitations, supported by real-world case studies and experimental data.

This book benefits researchers, environmental scientists, nanotechnologists, engineers, and policymakers engaged in air quality, sustainability, and environmental technology. It serves as a valuable resource for academic professionals and industry practitioners seeking to understand or apply nanotechnology in environmental monitoring and pollution control.

Dr. Nabarun Ghosh is a former Professor of Biology and Advisor for the Biology Education and Biotechnology Program in the Department of Life, Earth, and Environmental Sciences at West Texas A&M University (2000–2024). He has held academic positions at several other institutions, including the University of North Texas (1992–1998), Richland College (1997), and Texas Tech University (Adjunct Faculty). Dr. Ghosh holds two Ph.D. degrees: one in Cytogenetics from the University of Calcutta, India (1995), and another in Biology from the University of North Texas, USA (1998). He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine (1999–2000) and was awarded prestigious fellowships from India’s Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Department of Non-Conventional Energy Sources (DNES). His research spans nanotechnology, air and water quality, biotechnology, and electron microscopy. He has collaborated on nanotechnology initiatives with Air For Life (UK) and Air Oasis (USA), and worked with organizations including the USDA, Texas Tech University, and Allergy ARTS Clinic, Texas, as well as scientists across India. Dr. Ghosh has published over 200 research articles and is the author of the book “What’s in Your Air?”. He serves on editorial boards and is a member of several prestigious scientific organizations, including the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI). He has received numerous honours from WTAMU, the Texas A&M University System, the Texas Society for Microscopy, and the Indian Phytopathological Society. His research on air quality, allergy, and asthma has been widely recognized and featured by media outlets, including in 2024.

Dr. Shaily Goyal earned her Ph.D. in Plant Biotechnology from Mohanlal Sukhadia University, India, where she worked as a Research Associate in the Laboratory of Biomolecular Technology funded by CSIR, India. During this time, she also contributed as a Teaching Assistant, delivering lectures and supporting coursework in Biology, Botany, and Biotechnology. She further advanced her academic career with a second M.S. degree from West Texas A&M University, USA. Her current research focuses on air quality, with particular emphasis on PM2.5, aeroallergens, and nanotechnology. Dr. Goyal has led and completed multiple air quality analysis projects at West Texas A&M University. She has authored over 40 peer-reviewed research articles and book chapters, co-authored two textbooks for graduate and postgraduate students, and served as editor of a research-focused book.

Dr. Debajyoti Deb Ghosh is a distinguished biomedical researcher and educator with a strong track record in academic and translational research. He earned his Ph.D. in Allergy and Immunology and completed postdoctoral training in France and the United States, with a research focus on the pathogenesis of complex allergic and inflammatory diseases. He currently serves as a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, where his work is supported by U.S. federal and industry-sponsored grants. He has been recognized for his scientific contributions through multiple honours, including election as a Fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI). He is a recipient of several international fellowships and travel awards, including the DAAD fellowship and multiple AAAAI Featured Abstract and Travel Grant awards. His current research integrates omics data analysis to uncover gene expression signatures linked to inflammatory diseases, culminating in several peer-reviewed publications and a patent granted in 2022. His team is also actively exploring omics-based biomarkers related to environmental and occupational exposures, with the goal of advancing precision medicine.
