Calligraphy and related arts make up the most important forms of Irano-Islamic art. For a better, more comprehensive understanding of Iranian art up to the present day, it is imperative to understand the calligraphy’s influence on Iranian culture. Hamid Ghelichkhani, a contemporary master of this art, has put together this first-of-a-kind dictionary.
Calligraphic expressions are in either Persian or Arabic followed by an English description based on Persian texts and often accompanied by an illustration. These expressions which are key to understanding old calligraphic treatises and many other sources on Islamic art, are meant to familiarise the reader with both common and forgotten Iran calligraphic traditions.

Über Autor(innen)

Hamid Reza Ghelichkhani, Ph.D. (2012, Delhi University), is a calligrapher and an independent scholar. He has published several books including Zar-Afshan: A Dictionary of Terms Relating to Calligraphy, Ornamentation, and the Making of Manuscripts as Found in Classical Persian Poetry (Tehran, 2013).

Shervin Farridnejad, Ph.D. (2014, Georg-August University of Göttingen), is a calligrapher, illuminator and scholar of ancient and classical Iranian Studies at the Austran Academy of Sciences, Vienna. He has published monographs, and articles most notably on the Judeo-Persian and Zoroastrian iconography, literature and manuscript cultures, among others Die Sprache der Bilder: Eine Studie zur ikonographischen Exegese der anthropomorphen Götterbilder im Zoroastrismus (Harrassowitz 2018).
