Beispielhaft lässt sich an den Werken in diesem Band die Entwicklung der Tasteninstrumente verfolgen: Die frühen Stücke waren für Cembalo gedacht, zwei davon für ein Instrument mit der so genannten „Wiener Bassoktave“, die es ermöglichte, Akkorde mit einer Hand zu greifen, die über eine Handspanne hinausgingen. Unsere Ausgabe gibt diesen Stellen Ausführungsvorschläge in Fußnoten bei. Das Hammerklavier stand Pate bei den späteren Werken. Gerne bearbeitete Haydn auch eigene Kompositionen, wie etwa das „Largo assai“ aus dem „Reiterquartett“, für Klavier. Der Fingersatz für diese völlig neu überarbeitete und erweiterte Urtextausgabe stammt von Christine Schornsheim, Spezialistin für historische Aufführungspraxis.
