Haydns zahlreiche Divertimenti für Streicher und Bläser sind heitere Gebrauchsmusik, über deren Entstehungsumstände wir nur wenig wissen. Viele stammen aus den frühen Jahren Haydns, als der Komponist sich mit musikalischen Gelegenheitsarbeiten über Wasser halten musste. So entstand auch das Divertimento D-dur Hob. II:8 für zwei Flöten, zwei Hörner, zwei Violinen und Bass möglicherweise schon in der 1750er Jahren. Es handelt sich hier um eine der wenigen Kammermusikkompositionen Haydns, bei denen Flöten zum Einsatz kommen.
