1. Why did you choose this topic?

Liberal democracy is under pressure around the world. It is threatened internally by populist forces and externally by authoritarian regimes such as China and Russia. Liberalism is the foundation of all modern democracies. Only if liberalism as a broad way of thinking evolves, liberal democracy may survive.

2. What new perspectives does your book offer?

Liberalism, as a broad school of thought, is the bedrock of our democracies. Often pronounced dead, but still alive and kicking, it is in need of profound renewal. It has the potential to provide answers to the great challenges of the 21st century, such as climate change, pandemics, global migration, systemic competition with authoritarian regimes, and digitalisation. The volume reflects self-critically on liberalism and offers liberal answers to the great questions of our time.

3. What makes your topic relevant for current research debates?

Liberalism is a broad current of thought that refers to different authors. What they have in common is that they place the freedom of the individual as a central value. Liberalism is often associated with market radicalism, social coldness and ecological blindness. But today, more than ever, we need a renewed liberalism that takes a broad view of the great issues of the future.

Our volume invites people to reflect on the foundations and development of our liberal democracy. It would be exciting to discuss the ideas collected with people who are interested in democracy and actively working to preserve and improve it – worldwide.

'Update Liberalism' takes a self-critical look at the crises and challenges of the 21st century and formulates possible responses to the main challenges of our time.

Rainald Manthe, geb. 1987, ist Soziologe und Autor. Er war Direktor des Programms 'Liberale Demokratie' beim Think-Tank 'Zentrum Liberale Moderne'. Rainald Manthe hat über transnationale Treffen sozialer Bewegungen – die Weltsozialforen – promoviert und schreibt regelmäßig zu Fragen der Demokratieentwicklung.

Ralf Fücks ist einer der Gründer und Direktor des Zentrums Liberale Moderne in Berlin, einem Think-Tank und Diskussionsforum zur Erneuerung der liberalen Demokratie. Zuvor war er 21 Jahre lang Vorstand der Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung und Senator in Bremen. Er publiziert in deutschen und internationalen Medien zu Fragen ökologischer Transformation, politischer Strategie und internationaler Politik.
