Off the cuff. In the days when couriers had to travel by horse, it was often not worth getting off the horse to deliver a short message. If people had questions about a message, such a messenger would answer off the cuff, without thinking too much, from his high horse, usually spontaneously and without thinking. Meschugge = verrückt. Mauscheln = undurchsichtige Vereinbarungen treffen. „Wenn Jidde on Katzoff mauscheln, hodd dr Buhre Schlammassel. = Wenn sich jüdische Viehhändler und Metzger einig sind, erleidet der Bauer Schaden. Ich wuchs in einem keinen fränkischen Dorf auf.
In unserem Haus lebten meine Eltern, meine Oma mütterlicherseits, mein Zwillingsbruder, mein kleiner Bruder und ich.
Meine Großeltern aus der Linie meines Vaters wohnten auch im selben Dorf.
Mein Opa was Schmied und war zweimal verheiratet.
Seine erste Frau starb bei einer landesweiten Grippewelle sehr jung. Bis er ein zweites mal heiratete, versorgte er seine drei Kinder allein.
Seine zweite Frau bekam vier Kinder von ihm.
Mein Vater war der Jüngste.
