Freud’s preoccupation with the phenomenon of fetishism occupies a special position both within his work and with regard to the theoretical genesis of his thought. This edition reconstructs Freud's examination of fetishism, which can be read as a key to illuminating central psychological mechanisms and shifts within his thought. First, the discursive ground is outlined on the basis of which an eroticisation of fetishism could take place. Building on this, Freud's writings on fetishism are reconstructed and commented on in relation to his work. Subsequently, some central positions of psychoanalytic reception after Freud as well as productive further developments of the figure of fetishism in cultural theory are presented.
